The lavish production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway hit The King and I.

Deborah Kerr is an English schoolteacher who travels with her son Louis to Siam, where she has been contracted by the king (Yul Brynner) to teach his many children about the world outside their cloistered existence. Arrogant and chauvinistic, the king is very content as the unchallenged ruler of his kingdom. Kerr’s Anna is a very strong woman herself, and it isn’t long before the two are butting heads.

“Even without the music, this well-written story would be a splendid entertainment. But it’s the music, that wonderful score written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, that makes this movie as beloved as it is.”
