This screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Roisin Agnew, director of The Ban, Actor Stephen Rea and local filmmaker and director of Mother Ireland, Anne Crilly.

Directed by Roisin Agnew, short documentary film, The Ban follows the period of The Troubles from 1988–1994, when representatives of Sinn Féin such as Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness were banned from speaking on TV and Radio, reflecting on the British government’s use of the threat of ‘terrorism’ to justify censorship.

Presented in modern documentary style, melding archive footage with voiceover contributions including from actor Stephen Rea (among the voices of the re-dubbing at the time) and Gerry Adams, The Ban stands as a time-capsule of a particular time in Northern Ireland’s history, which is equally as relevant and timely in 2024.
