Nerve Centre, Magazine Street, Derry~Londonderry
Cult Movie Club is a regular screening series which unearths some of the most unappreciated and underseen movies from the cinema vaults to allow audiences to enjoy them once more on the big screen. This year’s selection will be Derry filmmaker Colm Villa’s 1999 film Sunset Heights starring Toby Stephens, James Cosmo and Jim Norton.
This screening will be introduced by local film historian and programmer Denzil Browne, will include cabaret style seating and will be followed by a Cult Movie soundtrack disco with visuals from Denzil Browne post-screening.
Filmed in and around Derry and Donegal in 1997 and 1998 with notable cameos from local actors such as Emer McCourt, Seamus Ball, Gordon Fulton, BJ Hogg and Don Baker, Sunset Heights presents a dystopian view of the city in the one of the first feature films made just following the Good Friday agreement.
A city in Ireland — in the near future. An uneasy peace has hung over the city for a number of years now. Law and order are maintained by two rival gangs, the Boilermen and the Westies. Between them they rule the city. Luke Bradley (Toby Stephens) is an ordinary citizen who has avoided being involved in either of the gangs, until his child is murdered, the latest in a series of child killings which have swept the town. The gangs join forces to track down the murderer . . .
