Something in the Barn: Folklore, Fear and the Horror Short

Three filmmakers from this year's British Short Film Competition take horror's oldest stories and give them new teeth.

Adrián Ramírez León, whose one-minute shorts have drawn tens of millions of views online, turns a one-night stand into darkly comic horror in Night Whispers.

John Foxen, editor and co-producer of Pawen, discusses its reimagining of W. W. Jacobs' classic The Monkey's Paw as a family tragedy.

Filmmaker Isabelle Kirk’s Pandora reworks the Pandora myth into a dystopian tale of family secrets and the price of female curiosity.

Together they discuss how folklore is reanimated for today's audiences, and the different routes from viral shorts, film school and festival buzz to a sustained career in genre.

Meet Adrián Ramírez León

Adrián Ramírez León is a Spanish award-winning filmmaker based in London, known for his genre-bending take on horror. His films have screened at Oscar® and BAFTA-qualifying film festivals, and his one-minute horror shorts have drawn over 75 million views across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

Building on momentum from both social media and the film festival circuit, he is now developing longer-format projects that expand his distinctive style in bold new directions.
