Nerve Centre, Magazine Street, Derry~Londonderry
Join The Playhouse’s Artitude: Climate, Culture & Circularity project for a special event screening of cult eco sci-fi masterpiece, Silent Running.
Set in the aftermath of a mass climate catastrophe, the film and its haunting soundtrack sounded a prescient warning about the dire effects of climate change that is perhaps even more relevant now than it was when first screened in 1972.
The film will be followed by a conversation with Dr. Aimee Mollaghan of Queen’s University Belfast, and writer and comedian Peter E Davidson. Together they will explore the science fiction and music that elevated the activist counterculture and environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s into mainstream popular discourse.
The evening will finish with a live rendition of the original song Silent Running, written specially for the film by Joan Baez. Musical Artist TBA.
Dr. Aimee Mollaghan is the author of the monograph The Visual Music Film (2015). Her current research interests focus on animation, the relationship between music, sound and the moving image, and landscape and sound in cinema.
Artitude: Climate: Culture & Circularity is a partnership project led by The Playhouse, along with Northern Ireland Resources Network, Zero Waste North West and Queen’s University Belfast. Funded by the National Lottery Climate Action Fund UK, the project uses the arts and creative practice to engage communities in climate action.
