Ones To Watch Presents Spike Lee Retrospective Double Bill
Ones to Watch offers young people the training and skills they need to curate online and live event content for themselves as film lovers and filmmakers.
During Reel Lives our Ones to Watch group host a Spike Lee Retrospective Double Bill over two evenings showing Do the Right Thing and BlacKkKlansman.
Do the Right Thing will be followed by a talk by Stephen Butler, lecturer in Contemporary English Literature at Ulster University. Stephen specialises in genre fiction (esp. 21st century speculative fiction, crime and horror) and comic books.
His talk will discuss the cultural impact of Spike Lee's films, using both his early and more recent work to show how his films highlight issues to do with both racial and economic disparity in the USA and how little has changed on either problem in over forty years of Lee's career.
It's the hottest day of the year in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn, and tensions are growing there, with the only local businesses being a Korean grocery and Sal's Pizzeria. Mookie, Sal's delivery boy, manages to always be at the centre of the action.
Nominated for 2 Oscars®.
“I believe that any good-hearted person, white or black, will come out of this movie with sympathy for all of the characters. Lee does not ask us to forgive them, or even to understand everything they do, but he wants us to identify with their fears and frustrations.” — Roger Ebert.
1989. USA. Director: Spike Lee. Cast: Danny Aiello, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee. Duration: 2hrs. Cert: 18.
