Nyoni uses unsettlingly playful surrealism in this account of a malign uncle and the family mythmaking that effaces his crimes...
Light in Motion Competition winners will be announced before the Closing Night Gala.
On an empty road in the middle of the night, Shula (Susan Chardy) stumbles across the body of her uncle. As funeral proceedings begin around them, she and her cousins bring to light the buried secrets of their middle-class Zambian family, in filmmaker Rungano Nyoni’s surreal and vibrant reckoning with the lies we tell ourselves.
BAFTA winning writer-director Rungano Nyoni cements her credentials as one of today’s most visionary auteurs with her second feature, On Becoming a Guinea Fowl (produced by A24, BBC Film and Ireland’s own Element Pictures) blending black comedy and magical realism, for which she was awarded Best Director by the Un Certain Regard jury at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
