This adaptation of Whitehead’s novel about two young friends trapped by institutional abuse is told with piercing beauty by RaMell Ross...
Elwood Curtis’s college dream shatters alongside a two-lane Florida highway. Bearing the brunt of an innocent misstep, he’s sentenced to the netherworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal reformatory sunk deep in the Jim Crow South. He encounters another ward, the seen-it-all Turner. The two Black teens strike up an alliance: Turner (Brandon Wilson) dispensing fundamental tips for survival, Elwood (Ethan Herisse), clinging to his optimistic worldview.
Described by Moonlight director Barry Jenkins as ‘stunning’, writer-director RaMell Ross’ next step after his Oscar® nominated documentary Hale County This Morning, This Evening, is a visionary and evocative adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer prize winning novel, Nickel Boys. Led by a string of outstanding performances from Oscar® nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson, this innovative and ambitious film is among the finest works of modern American arthouse cinema.
