Filmmaker and academic Des Bell presents his recently published book Ireland Through a Critical Lens : A miscellany of life-writing on politics, culture and film.

His richly illustrated text narrates his own experience of growing up in Derry as he seeks to transgress borders in an increasingly divided society.

His writing relates this personal trajectory to wider debates about how we might make sense of our recent troubled past and face up to the challenges of the present in Ireland. In tandem with his critical writing, Des's films from We'll Fight and No Surrender, to Rotha Mor an tSaoil (Hard Road to Klondike) to the Enigma of Frank Ryan take us on us on a journey of personal discovery and cultural insight and have played a central role in the emergence of cultural studies in Ireland from the 1980s to the present.

Des Bell, together with long time collaborator Stephen Rea, presents some excerpts from his book together with clips from his films.
