Named by Entertainment Weekly, as one of the top fifty cult movies of all time, Grey Gardens was something of an accident as the filmmakers Albert and David Maysles only came across Edith Bouvier Beale and Edith ‘Little Edie’ Bouvier Beale when they were involved in another project ~ a movie about (Jacqueline Kennedy’s sister) Lee Radziwill’s childhood in the Hamptons. As part of their research, the Maysles brothers were introduced to the reclusive mother and daughter, and became captivated by their eccentric world. As a result, they abandoned the Radziwill film and decided to concentrate on the Beales and, a year after meeting the two women, began filming Grey Gardens.

“As tender and revealing as it is completely bonkers.” ~ Kate Muir, The Times
