As of August 2024, Foyle Film Festival now carries two BAFTA-qualifying awards as part of its annual Light in Motion Short Film Competition — the latest category of which has opened up entries for British Short Animation.

The festival is now privileged to have two BAFTA-qualifying categories in British Short Film (recently introduced in 2023) and British Short Animation, along with three Academy Award-qualifying categories in Irish Short Film, International Short Film and Short Animation. FFF is also an IFTA-qualifying festival in Irish short film and animation.

Nerve Centre’s Head of Film Eavan King expressed her excitement and gratitude for the opportunities this will particularly bring to UK filmmakers going forward:

“It's a testament to the great work of our jury and the high calibre of animation we are privileged to curate and programme as part of Foyle Film Festival. Nerve Centre has produced BAFTA-nominated work in Short Animation in 2006 for The Crumblegiant and to have another link for talent from this region and across the UK to BAFTA is really something to celebrate”.

On 2 August 2024, BAFTA confirmed the new updates for its categories, eligibility, voting rules and timeline for the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards, which has resulted in Foyle Film Festival receiving this additional recognition.

The guiding principles are to celebrate creative excellence, level the playing field, provide a fair and robust process, encourage positive change, and evolve alongside the ever-changing industry landscape.

The Late Deadline for the Light in Motion Competition is Monday 12 August 2024. Learn more on how to enter here.
