Cinematic Breakfast: West Side Story
West Side Story is a musical with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
Inspired by William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, the musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks, from Puerto Rico, are taunted by the Jets, a white gang. When Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang's leader, Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks, tragedy looms.
Won 10 Oscar®s - including Best Picture.
'Leaving aside the pliés and pirouettes, West Side Story is a street tuff take on Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet that feels as contemporary now as it did on its initial release in 1961.' Stella Papamichael, BBCi - Films
'West Side Story is...so good that superlatives are superfluous. Let it be noted that the film musical, the one dramatic form that is purely American and purely Hollywood, has never been done better.' The Hollywood Reporter
