Cpl. John McBurney is an injured Union soldier who finds himself on the run as a deserter during the Civil War
The surprise arrival of a wounded Union soldier (Colin Farrell), seeking sanctuary from his Confederate enemies, arouses a lot more than curiosity at the all-girls boarding school in Virginia during the American Civil War. Soon he becomes the manipulative conduit for lover/father/mentor fantasies of both students and teachers, with predictably destructive results.
“Coppola’s clever southern Gothic melodrama is tense, purposeful and more richly intriguing than Don Siegel’s priapic 1970s adaptation of the same novel.”
