The Hunt (Jagten) & 25th Foyle Film Festival Light In Motion Awards
Thomas Vinterberg’s critically-acclaimed THE HUNT is a powerful and disturbing depiction of how quickly a lie can become the truth when gossip, doubt and malice are allowed to flourish.
Following a tough divorce, 40-year-old Lucas is starting to pull his life back together again. He has a new girlfriend, a new job, and is in the process of re-establishing his relationship with his teenage son Marcus. However one passing remark threatens Lucas’s newfound stability. One of the children he looks after at the nursery where he works, a little girl with a vivid imagination, tells a random lie which is impossible to ignore. Her allegation spreads like a virus, quickly acquiring the veneer of truth the more it is told.
As shock turns to mistrust and then malice, it doesn’t take long before this small community is in a collective state of hysteria, igniting a witch-hunt that threatens to destroy an innocent man’s life.
Winner of Best Actor (and 2 other awards @ Cannes this year), and nominated for the Palme d’Or.
“Thomas Vinterberg’s best film since Festen is an unsettling psychological drama built around a harrowing performance from Mads Mikkelsen.”
David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
“The Hunt offers us, in two hours, a look at the world we exist in, and the equally dangerous world inside our heads. And how the two are both very different and very, very similar.”
Dan Mecca, Cannes 2012 Review
“The Hunt has hints of Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs and Von Trier’s Dogville in its portrayal of group hysteria, with its remorseless anti-logic… Mikkelsen’s performance is entirely convincing and all too plausible; and with him at its centre, The Hunt becomes an unbearably tense drama-thriller… There really isn’t ounce of fat on this picture, and the cinematography by Charlotte Bruus Cristensen is ravishingly good. Mikkelsen…shows just how excellent a performer he is.”
Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
