Ashes & Opening Night Party
Directed by Mat Whitecross and executive-produced by Coldplay, ASHES is a contemporary film noir that follows the difficult reconciliation between Frank Barron (Ray Winstone) and his son James (Jim Sturgess). James tracks his estranged father down to a hospital secure unit and discovers he is suffering from memory loss. James is anxious to take his father back to be with his family, but is informed by the doctor that Frank is suffering from Alzheimer’s. Frank is being confined to hospital for his own good as the disease is making him prone to violent outbursts. Touched by the emotional impact of seeing his father in such a state, James breaks him out of hospital, and the two men go on a road trip with a difference.
The journey proves difficult for James, who has to cope with Frank’s hallucinations and mood swings, while trying to hide from the police. As they travel, glimpses of the old Frank emerge, and gradually the two begin to bond. But both men are weighed down by the ghosts of the past, and neither is quite how they seem on the surface…
Director Mat Whitecross and the stars of ASHES, Ray Winstone and Jim Sturgess, will be in attendance to introduce the film and take part in an after screening discussion.
